American Airlines Is Offering The Galaxy
Looks like the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 will have a lofty reception when it arrives this month. American Airlines and Samsung are ready to put some 6,000 Galaxy Tab 10.1 tablets in the air in premium cabins of select transcontinental and international flights in lieu of the more traditional in-flight entertainment centers. The specially prepared tablets will be customized with American Airlines media and most likely some UI tweeks that will remind folks on whose plane they are flying in.
This announcement ties in nicely with American Airlines previous announcement that it would offer passengers the option to purchase in-flight streaming content from its video library. Passengers will be able to select the content they want to stream and enjoy it on their own WiFi enabled devices, or the Galaxy Tab 10.1, during the flight. This feature alone is quite interesting, but the ability to view content on the 10.1 adds to the experience. Only problem is, that only the premier seats will have access to the wonder tablet on select flights.
The tablets will replace the airline’s current personal entertainment device in American’s premium cabins on transcontinental flights New York – Los Angeles, New York – John F. Kennedy (JFK) and San Francisco International (SFO), and Miami International (MIA) and Los Angeles International (LAX) served with 767–200 and 767–300 aircraft; international flights to and from Europe and South America served with 767–300 aircraft; and transcontinental flights departing Boston – Los Angeles served with 757 aircraft.
“Through our agreement with Samsung, American is the first North American airline to offer a branded tablet onboard its aircraft,” Virasb Vahidi, American’s chief commercial officer, said in a news release. "We are working hard to revitalize our fleet and invest wisely in new products and services to modernize and enhance the travel experience,” Vahidi said. “Working with Samsung to outfit our premium cabins with the innovative Galaxy Tab will give our premium customers a modern and innovative in-flight entertainment experience.”
This acceptance of the Galaxy Tab 10.1 in the luxury section of select flights is going to create an interesting dynamic for some. You can see it now, the businessman who has an iPad 2 neatly tucked away in his briefcase pulling it out to compare it to the Tab 10.1. Smart strategy on Samsung’s part as many will realize that the iPad 2 isn’t the only game in town.
