KLM is changing the baggage rules for its European flights and introduced a baggage fee. Are you about to travel with KLM any soon? Read on and find out about it.

KLM hand baggage restrictions

The following applies to all economy class passengers. You're permitted to carry on board 1 item of hand baggage not exceeding the size of 55×25×35 cm or 21.5×10×13.5 inch (L x W x H). Moreover, one is allowed to take on board one additional item such as a handbag, a small laptop etc. The total weight of both the hand baggage and the additional item must not exceed 12 kg/lb.

KLM baggage allowance

The baggage allowance is to be changed as of April 22, 2013. If it the old allowance that applies to you, read our previous post KLM baggage allowance 2012. In case you want to learn about the new rules, read on. On the intercontinental routes one piece of baggage is included in the ticket price. As for the European routes, KLM has decided to introduce a fee for checking in baggage. The internet fee is €15 whereas the airport fee is €30.

The baggage cannot exceed the weight of 23 kg/50.5 lb and be larger than 158 cm/62 in. The exception are certain routes e.g. from many African countries, South America as well as flights from USA and Canada where the allowance is 2 items of baggage with maximum weight 23 kg/50.5 lb and not exceeding 158 cm/62 in. I am getting ready to fly KLM from Europe back to the states and I am very nervous about getting charged extra fees. Do they consider a BACK PACK as a purse? I intended to take one carry on and my nice back pack. When I flew AirFrance over here I had no problem! AirFrance had no available flights. After reading all of the above negative comments, I should have just taken old "stinky Delta"...at least they don't get upset if you are over a few pounds!!!

Think these baggage charges are a disgrace. What if you are unable to check in throiugh the internet due to wherever you are. The fees are robbery. For Europe, unless no other airline oprion, I would use other airlines, even as a Frequent Flyer.

Have just found out that I have to pay a£20. Luggage change for my trip to Toulouse
Makes my trip very expensive- next time will stick to one of the many other reasonable airlines and not pay this absurd charge

I went to Germany from uk last summer, I was allowed to take two pices, one small hand bag and one suit case of 22kg. It was an economic ticket, I don't know when klm has changed his policy, next time I have to fly with other airline,

The new rules for cabin baggage sizes are outrageous. I have just purchased a light weight cabin case for a trip from Stockholm to Amsterdam. On the cover is marked in big characters: cabin size all airlines 55x40x20. Your overhead bins are short of 5 cm! So now I have to buy a new bag but I won't fly KLM next time. I checked with a great number of other airlines and they all allow above measurements. Marita Dahlgren

Having just received our KLM flight information on size of hand lugage which was standard not so long back at approx.61cm x 31cm x 20 cm,both my wife and myself now seemingly need to purchase new hand luggage which will obviously add cost to the fight.

I am very disappointed in your decision, as this further diminishes the already thin difference in quality of service between KLM and most low-cost companies. Why exactly would I ever book a ticket through KLM instead of, say, easyJet, considering the price is usually double without any obvious benefits?
I will avoid flying with KLM in the future and I am extremely disappointing I had to find out one day before the flight that a major airline which I frequently used had made a significant reduction in the baggage allowance without making this obvious at ticket purchase or at least reducing ticket prices. Shameful...
