The UK-based company Ascend, an airline industry data provider, has recently published it's annual airline safety report. The results were not very favorable, most aspects worsened compared to the previous year. Still, the overall trend is very optimistic in long-term. Let's have a look at the results in detail.

More fatal accidents in 2010

The report focuses on fatal accidents. A slight increase has been recorded, compared to year 2009. The main metrics, fatal accident rate, indicates the probability of experiencing an in-air accident leading to death. In the year 2010, one fatal accident happened in about 1.3 million flights. Compared to 2009, the value worsened a bit. It was one per 1.5 million flights. The total number of fatal accidents increased by 22% to 28 in 2010.

828 people died last year

About 4 percent more people were killed in an commercial airline accident last year, compared to 2009. A total of 828 passengers and crew members lost their lives in 2010. To compare, it was 731 in 2009. 472 found death in four largest accidents in 2010.

Overall trend is improving rapidly

As cautionary as the latest numbers may seem, the overall trend didn't stop improving. See the chart below. The trend is undoubtedly very positive. If we compare the current decade to 1990s, we can see a vast improvement of the fatal accident rate. The average rate went down more than one per 700,000 flights.
