An „unscheduled maintenance“ is being performed on all 96 Boeing 757s currently operated by United Airlines. Flight delays and cancellations are unavoidable today.

The airline should be back again in full service on Thursday.

Air data computers need checks

Checks are focused on the air data computers. These devices measure air speed and other in-flight parameters necessary for the auto-pilot to function correctly. Rahsaan Johnson, United Airlines spokesman, said Tueusday that all 96 Boeing 757s currently in service need to be checked. The procedure should take no more than 60 to 90 minutes per aircraft.

The airline emphasizes that the serviced devices are fully functional at this time. The checks are part of the modification procedure of the flight control system. This needs to be performed in order to comply with the FAA's airworthiness directive. It requires that the crew must be able to stop an overspeed or stall alarm sounding in error. Continental Airlines, now merged with United, also operates 62 757s. However, these aircraft are not taking part in the procedure.
